The Ghanaian Society of Cardiology (GSC) and the South China Cardiovascular Society (SCS) signed a collaboration agreement to work together in advancing cardiovascular medicine in both countries. The signing was done by the presidents of both societies at the first AGSM of the GSC in Aug 2018. This bilateral agreement covers areas of cardiovascular research, training and capacity building. Speaking at the ceremony, the president of the GSC stated that the two countries have collaborated with each other over the past 8 years with medical exchange programs whereby some Chinese doctors visit Ghana and vice versa. During this period, the China government has helped train seven Ghanaian doctors in interventional cardiology. There has also been several visits of experts from China to carry out heart surgeries in Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Korlebu National Cardiothoracic Centre.
Additionally, doctors from the 2 countries have undertaken a large community based research to assess the burden of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors in Ghana. Samples were drawn from 4 regions in Ghana and the publication of results is keenly awaited.
